help on overhaul failure

With the head gasket not blowing out I'd give the pistons and rods a good check over. I'd install the crankshaft rods and pistons with no rings and check the piston clearance on all sides of all four pistons, and make sure the rods don't tilt the pistons or push them to the side. Once that checks out then install the rings after checking each one for end clearance.

Thanks to all who replied. One thing that nobody commented on was whether the water could have been low enough to cause damage when the temp gage still showed 180 degrees. Any comment would be appreciated.

I would think if the water got low enough to steam then your temp gauge should also read that temperature. If you gauge never read more than 180* I'd think the water hadn't gone low enough to cause the damage.
