hey guys, i just bought my first flathead and the previous owner siad he thinks it is a truck motor. motor has water pumps on block, distributor on cam in front, water ports on ctr of head, bellhousing on block with stamping: D 18 4 11. i did some research and connot find anything like this. any help would be appreciated thanx, ron

21 or 24 stud? Your description could have been for either. Markings on the heads? Raised deck? No other markings on the bell? Those marks you describe are lot numbers that have never been decoded.

Pictures of front of block and manifold above distributor, sides at pan rail will date these prewar 24 studs. Pulling a head for pictures of water passages will tell whether 221 or 239. Accessories all interchange between years but are frequently good indicators of what sort of vehicle the engine was last in.

38 to 41 so far . "Raised Deck" is the intake manifold gasket surface is higher than the surrounding area, Found mostly around 41.

thanks for the help, i really appreciate it. i`ve only owned ohv engines until now so this is all new to me and im glad to have knowlegable people to assist me in my new adventure of early and traditional hot rodding

2 quick things to look for: If there are two ribs on each side of block leading down to wide spots on pan rail (they are freeze plug locations) block is '39-40. If there is a "raised" pad of iron (actually, the sides are lowered) where the intake sits, a pad shaped just about like the gasket, engine is 1941--WWII. 221 and 239 look the same, and many 221's have been bored to 239, but original displacement can be determined by the shapes of deck water passages. External stuff MAY Id what the engine last lived in, but mean very liitle as practically everything can be transplanted between a wide range of years.
