Help decoding my 239

Hello All!

I am needing help decoding my engine! I have been on line & have not had much luck (other then the "C" most likely means Canada?) finding a site that offers a cut & dry method or chart to help decode!

Cast into the integrated bell housing:
C13511
59

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Happy Holidays!

There is no cut and dry method. If there is no 59 cast in the bellhousing, it is pre 1946. How many head studs?

Canadian engines generally always have the prefix on the front left side of the post war engines. The prefix always begins with C such as C59 or C69 for the immediate post war. If it has the 59 on the back bell then it is a post war engine used through 1948. Now it could also be a 41A 221 block since both the 59A (239) and 41A (221) had the 59 on the back bell.

Any other number that might be there may have had meaning to production people at Ford but that meaning has been lost to time. There is sometimes a date code stamped into the intake deck at the rear right but no guarantee to that.

There are a lot of visual items/features on a block that can help ID it, but the number cast into the block are of limited help. I would start with the number of head studs, 21 or 24. The lip or lack of at the top of the timing cover area. Shape of the water passage openings. "Raised" intake manifold mounting surface, etc.
