Help, anyone working on dash '56 Wagon?

New guy here, just bought a 56 Parklane with some issues. The gear selector plate screwed, bolted? (Automatic) to steering stem brace is a bit fubar. One sheet metal screw was holding it on, loosely.
I do not know what the specifics are of these two screws , machine screws, 10/24? 2" long?
The L side which had the sheet metal screw in threads may be toast, but I may try a chaser once I find out what they are.
Can anyone help?

I've long forgotten what the underside of a '56 dash looks like, but any chance you can start the tap from the backside? The threads may be better there.

10/32 X 1" with a lock washer - according to the 56 Ford parts book.

Thank you for responding, lock washer?

I believe flat head, countersunk screws are used, screwed into threads on the steering column brace. I believe the screw may need to be longer will look things over this weekend, thank you

Yes, they can be reached from the underside, the threads are all the way through the brace....

10/32nds may be what I'm looking for but I don't understand where lock washer comes in.

Unfortunatly theres not a pictorial or exploded view of that item in the parts book.

It just says what I posted . Good luck :D

I would need a reverse tap to come at it from the backside

I think an oval head, countersunk 10/32 would look great....I'll use a nut and washer on L side, person who put in sheet metal , one screw only messed up that side so much, I'd have to drill and go up a size screw. Then one screw head would be larger-- high visibility area so will go with a matching pass through bolt on L with nut washer.
Would love to see a close up photo of that area, have one?

Thank you, Oldmics, do you have a close up photo of that area? Also, does your manual show a rubber? Gasket between dash and selector plate?

Ok, ok, I'm back from a cabgx3 unbelievable!

Had the opportunity to take a tap out to the dash today, I believe it's a 10/24 NC about 2.5" long but of course ymmv. Need to find that dash plate gasket, none listed in Dennis C. or Macs

Well, that went well today....installed the plate with the new screws. I used black pliable door edge guard for the plate to dash trim....not entirely the best look (to me) but it's better than nothing for right now and will look ok to a passing glance.
Anyone a better idea for the trim?
