Help ....... 1930 Ford Model A Backfire

Have you changed the condenser? Check your points to see if they are set at .020. Also check the fuel out of the tank, sometimes crud gets down in the fuel shut valve does not cut fuel completely but does not flow enough for higher speeds. You can check this by turning the fuel shutoff off. Take the fuel line off the carb.loosen the fitting at the settlement bowel rotate the fuel line up above fuel level and tighten the line at the bowel. Turn the fuel valve back on blow in the line back in to the tank (best to remove gas cap first) . You should be Able to blow air into the tank fairly easily. If it is hard then frees up you have blown the crud back in to the tank. If that is the case you need to drain the fuel through a paint filter a couple of times .

I changed the condenser .... but thanks you may be correct about the fuel that will be my next try ..... and the points are set correctly and not burned

This thread is seriously old but reading through it I got aggravated when at the end never a single mention of whether the problem was resolved and what fixed it! So I thought I’d post what fixed mine when this happened. What was causing it was the coil. Although it was a brand new coil it was somehow breaking down at higher RPMs. After swapping the coil and giving it a slight adjustment with less advance (electronic ignition distributor) the problem was resolved. Hope this helps someone else…..

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have the same problem. I am running a down draft Stromberg 97 being fed by a 1-2 lb K&N fuel pump. These are all great suggestions that I will follow up on, but I have an additional situation which may be a cause. I have great agitation in the glass bowl which may be adding air to the fuel before it gets to the carb. I am relatively new to this setup so please forgive any ignorance on the subject.
Thank you
Warren
