Helmet distributor side caps

I plan on replacing plug wires on helmet dist. What is the procedure for separating the inner plate from outer cap. Does it screw off or pry off?

Just a press fit ALTHOUGH there is a little square tab that has to line up on a small cut out on the cap to the plate and the plate to the distributor so ALL line up in the proper locations!!!

The outer caps normally come off ok. The inner caps can sometimes get stuck in. If you take the coil off you can normally tap the inner plates out using a wooden dowel of some other softish tool.
The work is best done on a bench and not on a vehicle.
The outer caps are supposed to be somewhat retained to the inners with an o ring. If these are in place you might need to go to tapping the inners out to get them off with the outers attached.

There "should" also be a gasket that goes between the distributor and the plate/cap (NOT Cap & Plate) SO If you don't have those you need to order yourself a set!!!

I have found that more likely than not, the inner gaskets do not fit properly. The inner hole of the gasket is usually cut too small, causing you to tear the gasket as you try to fit it onto the inner cap. All kits seem to be the same in this regard. Bummer.

The outer cap has a center stud that passes through the inner cap. On the inside of the inner cap there is an O-ring over the center stud. Many times they harden crack and fall off but sometimes they harden in place so take both the inner and outer caps off together then remove the old O-ring.

Great point Terry, how the heck could I have forgotten that step??? Thanks for the save!!!
