Helmet Distributor: Base Casting Chipped

Notice in the photo part of the ring casting is missing.
I assume the emosed ring is to seal against oil leaks. Should I be concerned in using it? ...or does it just hold it in place and don'tworry?

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, while I don’t think that chip itself will affect the operation of your dizzy, it may have been caused by trying to force it into place while the tang was 180 degrees out. If that happened and the engine was cranked over, there may be more damage inside. Not an expert, that’s just a thought. That said, you may also consider an upgrade from your present 68 advance to an 11A advance, it having a better advance curve.

Looks like it might have been dropped on a concrete floor while someone was working on it. Since it's cast iron, I doubt if there is any real cause for concern.
Lubricate it, install it on your car and see how she runs.

Like others have said, probably of NO concern BUT 68's are SO plentiful and so many available in much better condition, I would get another one and send it to Michael at Third Gen, Charlie NY or a couple of others here on the barn and have it rebuilt and set up and maybe keep the one pictured as a spare. IMO

This one will be my spare. With all the information in the archives, I was able to rebuild the two distributors on my own. (Skip rebuilt the coil). I'll take the car for a test drive tomorrow and let you know how it fared.

F.Y.I. Charlie rebuilt my fuel pump. Outstanding work.

515 is Loctite anaerobic sealer that has a jelly consistency. Good for metal/metal flange sealing that may need to be removed later. Needs a decent flat surface but fills imperfections nicely.
