Heater Temperature Regulator

The temperature regulator valve in my 54 Victoria is leaking and needs to be replaced . I have purchased a new one and it is on the way . Before I dig into removal , is there anything I need to know or information I can use to make the job go easier ?

Brian, not sure if the one on your '54 is like the vacuum operated one on my '56 T Bird.
if so, should be pretty straight forward R&R, but don't forget to drain coolant down below the valve waterline!!

Drain engine coolant down to below the level of the water regulator valve.
Disconnect and remove heater hoses from the valve.
There is a mechanical cable from a dashboard knob that controls the valve position. Remove the cable clamp at the valve and pull the cable off the actuator.
The water regulator valve screws that hold it to the firewall should not be loosened until after the heater plenum screws (inside the car) are removed. Then carefully pull the heater plenum off and remove the clip that holds the water valve capillary tube to the heater plenum.
Use care in re-inserting the new water valve capillary tube clamp on to the heater plenum so as not to kink it.
They also had a vacuum operated type which does not have the capillary tube, but it has vacuum hoses that need to be pulled off the water valve. If you have that type, inspect vacuum hoses and test them for cracks before re-using them. Replace and vacuum hoses that won't hold vacuum.
I do my own vacuum testing using a Mityvac.
