headliner

I have a 1935 ford coupe that I am restoring. everything has bin going pretty good with the help of you guys on the ford barn. should had taken more pictures or wrote more things down. my queston is I got the front part of the headlines in and it looks good, no wrinkles, when you pull the back of the liner tight in back around the rear window what do you fasten it to to keep it tight. pictures would help but a reply only would be great. thanks, bill

When I did my '50 I had the back window out and glued the headliner around the edge with 3M spray glue on both surfaces. Be careful not to soak the cloth with the glue.....Mark

Bill, I started from the back and worked forward like my instructions said so it may be a little more trouble the way you have it. I made a 8 in strip of the black cardboard type backing board, one for each side, to fit along the bottom edge of back window well. Then spray glued the headliner to the back side of that to make the proper curve. I stapled the very bottom of the headliner covered cardboard to the tack strip. I first glued the headliner around the rear window opening, then the side curved pieces. I was able to end up with all left over cloth in the front where its easier to tighten and fit. My 2nd headliner job, certainly no pro, but happy with results. Thanks, Good luck, Paul

Is there a tack strip around the rear window? If so then the fabric is tacked there. If not then it should be glued to the framework around the opening.

Bill-

'35 Ford coupes had two different types of headliner attachments. Namely, an "early" and a "late." Their installations procedures are different. The "late" type is what Paul (oldbugger) is showing. I have an "early." Of the two I have found the "late" is the easier to install.
