I just installed a header out of an old car in my (A) it is a good one also used the kit from Mikes short pipe with hose and temp connection , and long bottom pipe with header connection. also put in a thermostat 160 temp ,the air is warm but not hot enough to heat the car. can i put a 180 or 190 thermostat in . any ideas . the opening coming from the top hose is about the size of a pencil may not be enough water? what do you think.

You did not say where your thermostat is located- before the upper hose T to the heater or after, between the T connection and the radiator. If the thermostat is between the head and the T connection you are getting very little circulation through the heater core, none when the thermostat is closed. Place the thermostat in the upper part of the hose between the T and the radiator. You will have constant circulation, even when the thermostat is closed. Yes, you should be fine going to a 180 'stat.

The flow will be limited by the smallest hole --pencil size is small, you want as close to 1/2 as you can.
The core of your used heater needs to be clean, many old heaters were removed because of restrictions ---you can check the flow with a garden hose, just be carefull to not clamp the hose to nozzle, just hold it together to prevent too much pressure.

Another possibility is that it is airbound --a low spot in the hoses with the heater high can cause this ---almost removing the uppermost hose at the heater and burping it can cure airbound.

The hotter the coolant the better the heater performance---

Check what MikeK says about t-stat location , the heater connection needs to be at the engine side of t-stat ( the t-stat blocking colant flow forces coolant through the heater)

I used a old header i was going to sale ,i don,t remember what i took it out of . i did put a 180 thermostat in went to the local parts store and spot welded a band on it . lowered my hoses to keep air pockets out and it heats better. Thanks ever one

Do you have the hot water coming in at the BOTTOM of the heater ? That way, the heater will always be filled with the hottest water and no air. You don't want gravity to empty your core, too quickly.
