Head Question

I purchased an original head from a friend to put on my car. I noticed the head, on the top, has a small Ford script stamped in it. I've never seen that before. Any ideas on this? Was it normal? Is this a rare head or anything? Thanks!

Heads installed on the assembly line did not have Ford script on them. After 1931 heads sold through Ford parts departments had Ford script on them so the customer would know it was a genuine Ford head.
Some EARLY 1927/28 heads did..

I've read that the early heads had Ford script and slightly higher compression but have never found one. I've had, probably still do have model A heads with Ford script but they have 1940s dates on them and normal model A combustion chambers.

It's not well known but there's a difference in early(28-29) and late(30-31) heads. The difference being in the water jackets. The wider, skinnier jacket being the late, I think, giving more surface area. The script head is the earlier.

Dave, neither of these heads are the earliest sample. I sold one to Charles Reese on here that was of the earliest type. This head had a raised round boss for the lock bolt and used a special bolt. I don't remember it having a script. Maybe Charles can post some pics of it.

Neither of those are even 1928 style heads.. The script one was made Ford, but well into the 1930s..

True. The early heads lacked the oblong hole in the water jacket which was later added to improve coolant flow. They were also reported to have a slightly higher compression ratio than later heads.

Also, most diamond block heads had the Ford script. Look under the water pump area and see if there is a small diamond. Supposedly diamond heads are stronger that original heads.

I have an early one with no oblong water passage in the center and there is no Ford
script on it.

I took another look at the script head and found a date 10-30-47 embossed on the water pump area. so everybody's right about that but there's still a difference in the water jacket cross sections, The oblong holes are different and the two holes on the top in the pictures are larger. I have seen this in other non script heads and assumed it was a running improvement but I'll defer to the pros.
