head gasket leak

:(Noticed the head gasket leaking on the 28' Phaeton, to the outside, (oil is clean). I'm planning to relace the gasket, a friend of mine was telling me of using liquid glass found at the drug store to stop the leak;) I think a new gasket would be best, any suggestions. And where would you get the gasket?

I just don't like the sound of putting anything in my engine with glass in the name... Have you tried to re-torque the head? Just might be that simple. If not any of the vendors will have gaskets. I order the majority of my parts from Bert's in Denver CO.

water glass (sodium silicate- egg preserver) is an exlnt bandade for temporary head or block cracks, it really works, BUT, if you dont follow the directions exactly as stated on the bottle you will plug your radiator solid, make sure you have the head surfaced before you re-install it, if you dont chances are you will have the same problem, use a copper gasket, its so much easier to clean the head and block with a copper gasket than a composition gasket which sticks to the block and head, torque in 3 stages and then every 100 miles till the bolts quit turning

:)I agree I'll not be putting anything in the radator. I will replace the head gasket. It was leaking while hot, after cooling off it stopped, that's when I though about the torque wrench, check it (engine cold) the wrench clicked at 55 ft. lb. I'll try it hot.

Thanks, Jim:)
