Have to use the choke on warm start

Hi guys,
I have a 30 Model A coupe and it starts the traditional way when cold fine. However, after I've driven awhile and shut if off, when I go to start it again I put the spark advance in full retard fully up on the and the throttle about half way down and it won't start unless I pull the choke out a couple of times. It just cranks over. I have tried leaving the spark advance lever in the middle after I've been driving and the same result.
Any input would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Scott

Leave the throttle up,flooding carb! Spark advance up! should not need to choke when car is warmed up!

Hey Scott. If you have to use choke even when warm, it's likely running too lean. Open the GAV a bit more and see if that helps.

Had the same problem, it turned out to be a coil heating up and working part time. Replaced coil, no issue.

I think Paul Shinn is right. A lean mixture which could be caused my a number of things such as a a low level in the float bowl or an air leak somewhere.

On a hot no start pulling the choke will clear a vapor lock ! Much quicker than grinding the starter. I had to do this with my old lawnmower

I find that the GAV must be about 1/2 turn open & the choke closed to start my Model A's when the engine is cold on a chilly day. Once the engine has been run to its full operating temperature (160F), I leave the GAV open 1/8 turn and do not use the choke to start the warm engine for the remainder of the day.

Besides starting with the GAV too lean, check for vacuum leaks, especially at the windshield wiper motor.

Re: Have to use the choke on warm start - UPDATE

Paul was right! Ran the GAV at about the ten o’clock position and she started right up when warm!

My car has always been that way, I pull the choke once and release quickly while cranking. Starts the same way cold or hot, spark fully retarded, gas lever all the way up. GAV set about 6-8 o'clock. After warm up GAV goes to about 10 o'clock. Same way starting, if I don't pull choke once and release very quickly it will sit there and crank.
