Harmonic Balancer

Update: I have just rung another contact in NZ who says that Murray retired last year. That would explain why I am having so much trouble contacting him and it seems these devices won't be seen again unless something comes of the above post.

Chris Horn is your man, he is now making the Balancer as a 2 piece for ease of installation and belt replacement.
His no NZ 0211986639.

Tanglfoot, are you in contact with Chris? These things are so good, I think he would be smart to let it be more widely known that he is making them. I realise that is up to him but.....
My immediate needs look like they are satisfied but there are plenty of other who I'm sure would want one.

I just got one of the two-piece ones.

I have one from '23 that is "two-piece" in the same manner as the two-piece pulleys – there's a collar that fits on the crank nose and the balancer/pulley slots into the collar. Are these new two-piece balancers like that or are they split in some other way?

Hmmm, two-piece. I assume for changing the belt. However, I am always cautious about being first with engineering projects. US $240 doesn't scare me though.

Hardly anything new. Two piece pullies have been about for years, so have these harmonic balancers.

It is like a regular two piece with the two tangs that engage two notches. Personally I think I would prefer a one piece but I am glad to have the damper pulley! I have always had smooth dealing with Mr. Horn.

The harmonic dampener has to be very tight fit on the crankshaft or it will not work as designed. I had to press mine on using a series of shorter and shorter bolts. You cannot press on the crankshaft for fear of damaging the trust bearings. For my money I would prefer a one piece dampener.

I’m reviving this thread because I am in New Zealand and have been speaking with Chris Horn. He is selling to the public at $NZ 450 (about $US 260 plus shipping). I have had one on another car since 2014 and wouldn’t rebuild an engine now and not use one. His phone number is (NZ country code is 64) 021 198 6639. They come with either a reverse scroll for rope seals or a smooth OD for the neoprene seals.
I have no interest in his business.

Did he say whether it's all two-piece pulleys now or can you get a one-piece if you want?

When I talked to Murray a couple years ago, I said I wasn't sure whether to go smooth or reverse-scroll for the collar because I didn't have a particular engine in mind yet. He said well you can always have a reverse scroll put on it by a local machinist, but you can't have one taken off. So I ended up buying the smooth type.

Maybe we can get a group buy together for 10 or so to save on shipping. I've shipped stuff to NZ that people have bought here and it's very expensive.
I'm surprised no one here has produced one. Simple lathe work and then vulcanizing the outer ring to the inner one. Or maybe go with an old design that could bolt to the stock pulley.
