harmonic balancer

Any advantage in using a harmonic balancer on a internally balanced engine like our Flatheads ? I see several vendors offer them now.

Flatheads have proven to be very durable in most applications without the use of a dampener. However, for high performance use I think it is an important addition.

The theory is that a harmonic balancer prevents broken crankshafts by absorbing certain frequency vibrations that will fracture a crankshaft at certain RPM levels. So how often does a flathead crankshaft without a balancer break?!

My stock 50 8BA crank broke in half at the center main. It now has a Merc crank and a ******** the center main cap. While I was rebuilding it I put on all the goodies I wanted in High School. 3 carbs, heads & a cam. I am 71 years old and in my second childhood I guess. Sounds like a balancer would be a good idea if I am going to drive it like a teenager.
