Hard starting 53 flatty when hot

the fuel pump is new. I think that the fuel must be draining out of the bowl down into the intake
Hi j macy; If your right I'm supprised you don't smell fumes after it sits for twenty minutes, and then is hard starting. That being said, mostly I'm learning as long as I listen. Good luck, Craig.

1: Take a loose sparkplug, connect to a sparkplugwire and ground the spakplug. Have someone turn the engine over when you have starting problems. The spark must be Blue, anything else you have an igintion problem

2:If the ignition is OK, remove the aircleaner, turn the throttle looking for gas squirting from the acceleratorpump. If no . If its empty the fuelpump should fill the carb after some turnover of the startmotor. So check the Fuel line between the pump and the gastank, any airleak/leeak there will let the fuel drainback to the tank.
And the pump will have big problem's sucking it back (thats the reason for the need to prime the carb). If ouy are at home you can remove the line between the pump and carb and take a can to catch fuel in. and let someone turnover the engine, you should get a fule pumping for each engine revolution

I have noticed that it leaks a little gas at the fitting which connects the fuel line to the tank

j macy,
Here is my 2 cents.
I agree with Jack and Ken and others that yours is a carb/fuel
related problem.
Ken and I have sources for power valves that are ethanol
tolerant. This of course doesn't help the evaporating of fuel in the bowl,
after 9 or 10 days you MAY have to prime the carb....Moving along...the
difficulty in starting after a 20 minute sit is in my expirience a power valve
that has leaked fuel into the manifold. The bowl is empty and to make
things worse the plugs are too wet to fire. All this you already know by now.
The cause of the leaky valve providing the valve is not dam-
aged is a poor seal between the
bowl and power valve in my opinion. It not uncommon for the power
valve gasket face on the bottom of the bowl to be off square with the
1/2-28 female thread that the PV threads into. The only way I have
been able to correct this condition is to machine this gasket face
square with the threads. I use a thin fiber gasket when installing the
PV after the machining operation.
To drag this out even longer the entire bottom face of
these bowls are far from flat. Milling this face seems to cure this and
provide a good vacuum seal.
I understand there are many different ways to get good
results from a rebuild...this my way.

If as you say you have a drip at the fuel tank connection, and i would almost bet it leaks with the motor shut off not when running,BECAUSE its sucking air when its running and not leaking. This has to be fixed.Pumps do NOT like sucking air.Choose whoever you like.BTW Charlie IS closer to you. Both of us would do it right.Balls in your court. LOL ken ct.

If you want to block off the heat from the bottom of intake I think you will find that a penny will fit both sides. Thats my two cents (PUN INTENDED)

Has to be a couple of the old pure copper ones not what passes for pennies today. Not sure what yrs. Some one will pipe in with this info. ken ct.

Or you can simply loosen the bolts a bit and try to slip in some copper or steel shimstock to cover the holes. No need to completely remove the manifold. Of course this assumes that you didn't forget to slather a nice layer of grease on both sides of the manifold gasket before assembly so it won't stick, tear apart and create an aggravatin' situation. 8^)

I just posted this on Bills site. My 46 (59Ab) does the same thing. I added an electric pump close to the tank. When it acts up I switch the electric pump on for a few seconds, it brings the cooler gas from the tank up. Presto I am on my way , no problems JMO Dan

have same problem 46 ford 8 BA just worked on the car for 2 months would not start no fuel used vacum pump to get fuel to carb i think power valve leaks washes cylinders causing low compresion i can feel the low compresion by rolling the motor with hand on carb that was yesterday today it fired right up in \ my case 2 problems power valve and fuel pump not holding prime hope this sheds some light a eal good flat head man in kemptville bruce solved my initial problems hope to see your meteor sunliner 43 car club fridays in kemptville next sumer

My late father-in-law was a mechanic in WW2 based in North Africa. They had to deal with this problem every day in the desert. Know how frustrating it is to get a flatty started with a messerschmidt circling?? In a fully loaded blitz truck that won't start in desert sand!!! They had all sorts of tricks to try and help solve this problem that has been with us as long as the flathead itself. Carb insulation, radiator overflow catch cans, coiled fuel line between fuel pump and carb to try to cool the gas before it gets to the carb. At least they had all new parts but were always stripping wrecks to keep damaged trucks mobile. But what I'm trying to say is this issue of the gas vaporising is common in hot climates and not just an issue due to the poorer fuels we have to live with these days.

I think that if you want to block off the manifold exhaust from the intake a penny on each side will work. That is my 2 cents worth lee34

My 53 setsfor long periods and I also had a hard time starting after engine got hot . I installed an electric fuel pump in the trunk just to prime the motor . That cured all my problems. I also have a patronix set up.

my 48 did same thing found that pwoer valve gaskt leaked, find a copper gasket for it check the float level, and the idle mixture to rich and hard to start, this one i was ammazed at finding luck Laurie
