Well-known member
on a 1928 commercial truck, closed cab. Has any one got one with a hand wiper that you can put a picture up on here?
i need to see where to drill the hole for it to come through.
i had to install one of those new manufactured windshield frames and i have nothing to go by.

thank you

This doesn't show where to drill the hole but shows how to mount the bracket.

There were two locations of the hole. Neil Wilson in his AA truck site describes the distance from the edge. The hole is centered in the windshield frame "width" - or perhaps more accurately described as "matching and in line with the A-79479 bracket."

The hand operated wiper is reproduced in two versions, intended for open car windshields. One is regular steel and the other is stainless. Neither are made exactly and need to be extended slightly where the shaft passes through the bracket. Other than that, they are REAL close to original including the blade mount connection.

that helps immensely. thank you
but its going to take some creativity to adapt to the new aftermarket frame. ooh yeah and its aluminum and im sure no where near the same shape as the original.
always a challange.

thanks guys.

Just leave it out, I never put it on ,on my 28ccpu.
just use rained on the glass.
no worries done thousands of miles in it, rain, no worries.

These hand operated wipers really work! I replaced the rubber with some stuff used on squigees and it worked even better

I would suspect that it lines up w/the centre of the steering wheel. I can look at my '31 later today and report back.

I've mentioned repop "hand wiper blades" as being available.

Ecklers is having a sale (10%) on their stainless steel version - so I ordered one.

Compared with an original the wiper rubber/blade is about 1" longer - but the path on the windshield is "centered" top to bottom - as in the rubber edge actually does a larger area of wipe.

Other than that it is a near duplicate of my rusty original.

Now it is noted in the literature that the repop hand wiper blades are aimed at the open cars - Ecklers themselves say "Does not fit your car of record" (i.e. the CC pickup)

But I'm here to report that it DOES fit - after a fashion.

The blade has two "necked out" portion which work with a small stainless washer to hold the wiper arm properly at the correct distance away from the glass. But if you leave the washer off, or put it on the "inside" next to the "handle" the wiper fits the A-79479 bracket. The raised nubs apparently can slip inside the tube and this allows the wiper arm to sit closer to the windshield - as in - not much different than the original wiper. At least on this truck.

One might be able to "file" the nubs off for a smoother fit.

One may wish to SEARCH this forum where "Hand Windshield Wiper" will yield a discussion of the "short" wiper stem and how to remedy it. There is at least one discussion thread.

Re; post #8, Finally remembered to check, and yes the wiper shaft comes through centered over the steering wheel. Makes sense to me.

what i didn't know was the place and how the upper mounting frame is cut out so the windshield will tilt out and fold back in. because the wiper arm goes through the glass frame. unsettling having to cut that new windshield frame
i have it sorted out now
thank you

The A-79479 hand wiper bracket has been reproduced in the past - but unfortunately seems like it is not presently.

Here's the print

Interesting the print does not show two "nubs" impressed into the shaft where it passes through the bracket. The washer apparently bears upon the interior wiper arm and is where the assembly bears against the windshield bracket.

Which lends credence to installing it as I have recommended above - and removal of the nubs with a file.

I expect this is an "assembly drawing" as no dimensions are shown instead everything called out by Ford part number.

The "alternate" construction (blow out balloon) is how my original and the repops are made.

The "pressing" at the flattening of the arm is different than either my rusty original or the repop.

Here's a picture showing the different shaft lengths of the Closed Cab and the open vehicles:

I would estimate the repop (stainless) as somewhat "between" the two lengths of shaft shown on the above originals.

As I say, the repop fits, but one can see that the "stand proud" of the arm on the outside can vary.

From the different length, front to rear, I would think that on the closed cab the wiper mounts to the windshield and on the open cabs it mounts to the windshield.
