Halogen Bulbs what is need to convert IF Anything

ok what am i missing, all the parts houses sell halogen replacement bulbs that directly go in the sockets for 27.00....i dont see this 12.00??
Mark, look in the latest Bratton's catalog, page 79 under quartz halogen kit, p/n 17840. I know these take more power but I had plenty of road light especially on high beam. They are fixed focus so no adjustment is needed. They really blast especially on high beam and the bulb replacements are $13 not $27. If I didn't dim for oncoming lights the other driver would flash. I never tried the direct replacement halogens but was well satisfied with these. Never had to replace a bulb in 4000 miles when I owned the car.

I don't know about halogens, but I've always thought that Model A headlights were more to be seen that to see; most of my after-dark driving is in the city, though, where headlights of any sort are pretty much unnecessary for seeing. That obviously is not your situation, Mark. Just passing on my experience.

Barry the replacement bulb is 13.00 AFTER You spend the 99.00 for the Kit to convert it all over... Where am i gaining anything??? i am spending 27 on a bulb that goes into the original socket and NO modification at all???:p

With new reflectors and stock bulbs I was not able to see well enough to drive and feel comfortable, and yes I have an altinator. I now run Hagegen bulbs and have no problem seeing well enough to drive any where I want to go.

Much better is EXACTLY what i want, my roads are dark and un-lit and need that light but explain above please?

If you follow the directions in the owner's manual on focusing the headlights you will see the you have to use the screw in the back of the headlight to adjust the bulb forward into the focal point of the reflector in relationship to the lens.

Mark, you're right if you have good reflectors I would buy the slip in $27 bulbs. In my case the reflectors were'nt much good anyway and the extra bulb I bought was only a spare. (The $99 kit came with bulbs). Barry

Mark:

Ken E has the best information. The original head light reflectors have a more parabolic contour as opposed to the more circular contour of the repro. reflectors. The ridges around the original headlight bulbs are there to 'point' the greater amount of light to the correct place on the reflector that results in the greates amount of light in the correct location for driving. Our local club and at another gathering, a large number of cars presented all their 'remedies', but the one person who had original, silvered reflectors with original fluted bulbs provided the greatest amount of light and was the only one able to adjust the pattern according to the directions shown in the service bulletins. Perhaps all the possible 'shortcuts' were not presented. I am new at this but I know the guy with the correct light system.

Just a thought.

Mark: which bulbs did you use? (P/N, source, and cost?) Did you replace reflectors? Did you replace sockets or were bulbs direct replacement. Thanks in advance.
