Putty knife away as much as possible. Then I use gas and a wire brush. Then sandblast. As James mentioned a torch is also great to burn it off, and I've used that method several times also. In fact if there is any undercoating, the torch is about the best way to get it off.

Have a friend with a Kiln?

Use a ceramic/glass kiln heat to 600 degrees for an hour or so- burns right off- no fooling around with a putty knife or sprays. Let cool then sandblast.

I will show a pic next week of Fly Wheel Housing I'm doing this to.

Yes sir, and if you're crazy, then welcome to the asylum. I use either my acetylene torch (low flame) or a propane torch. God I love the smell of smoking oily crud in the morning. :D

That smell was me cookin' next door, and Milton, just remember that many important inventions were made by "CRAZY" people. Thanks, James Rogers, for your torch de-cruder idea.--Bill W.

As a precaution, be careful of the asbestos dust when using any "dry" method of removing the crud inside a bell housing. Most likely the best way to contain the asbestos dust is by using a wet wash into a bucket, allow the fluid used to evaporate, and dispose of the dust as a hazardous waste.

Oven cleaner? That's about the only thing I hav'nt used out of the wife's kitchen. Sounds like a good idea, must give it a go. Looks like i'm in trouble with the wife again (or is that still)

Gasoline.........plenty of venalation, then gunk once the stuff in emulsified

This is the worst suggestion I have read on this subject....downright dangerous.

For safety sake use non-flameble solvents. Make a visit to your local burn unit and see why.....
