Groaning sound coming from the steering column

...and before you say it.... no my wife wasn't with me!

When I turn the wheel hard when the car is stopped, I hear a groaning noise that sounds - and feels - like it's coming from the steering column. No noise during normal driving. Any ideas?

did you check to see if there is 600w oil in the steering box? Do you hear the noise when you turn it left and right? or is it only one way?

I have Penrite steering lube in the box. I'm positive it's full. I think it's only when I turn it right.

Sounds like your steering gear is groaning under the strain placed on it. In my opinion the stock Model-A steering assembly is to weak to operate in a standstill situation. Just my .02 worth..........:)

Just a thought. Is the top bush just under the steering wheel lubricated. I had a similar problem years ago, and I sprayed some lube in there and the noise stopped.

One other thing, the rubber mount on the columb to tank bracket sometimes make the squark noise on my 28 pickup, also ,I drilled a hole above the top bush and fill that with oil as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I got some lube on the upper bushing and backed off on the shaft end play adjusting bolt. It seems better.

I would never turn the steering while stopped. Even on a newer car with power steering you won't feel the resistence to turning, but the working parts of the car will. Plus on a Model A all that extra strain makes the gas tank mount flex even more, and that can lead to cracks and leaks.

Thanks Tom and all who mentioned this. I'm still getting the hang of driving my A. I'll have to remember this. I was in a gas station and had to turn in a tight spot when it happened.

You're welcome. Also, you don't want to use the steering wheel to pull yourself into the front seat, for the same reason.
