The problem w/that is that it doesn't drain the last bit of oil, where the sludge is.

X2. Another concern, What if one drove over a stick or something that extended up and cracked open the ball valve?? ☹️

the problem with that (well, imo!) is that the on/off valve seems to be an item to expedite oil pan drainage... but as i see it... rather BLACK oil coming out! guess the vehicle has no engine ck lite: 'oil change due! ...'now 28 miles past schedule service'.

I have lived my 'mechanical career' path with this motto:

"you can have too dirty of oil, but never have too clean of oil!"

I see the valve has a threaded outlet. One would assume it has a plug that goes in it so that can't happen? Which kind of eliminates the reason for the valve in the first place.

I would take the handle off except when actually draining the oil. This is not something that I would add to my Model A. Just removing the plug is easy enough.

Regarding sludge in the bottom of the pan in 1930, my grandpa would drain the oil and then put kerosene in the engine and run it for a minute or so and then drain that out and add fresh oil.
