Grease Fittings

Is there an easy or preferred method for removing the press in type grease fittings? I bought a replacement set but am afraid I will damage or break the old ones pulling them out. Is there a special tool?

IF your replacing them just clamp down with a Vise grip pliers and twist slowly. As Mike said. I Never had one snap off before... but then again there's always a first.:rolleyes:
 
OK, now I have two press in ones that are different from the rest. The go in the front and actually look like the should screw in. I can not get behind them to tap them in, any recommendations?

I use a Snap-On stud puller with a "broken stud/dowel pin collet"installed. Works
great and no marring. I thought Pete was also using the same set-up? If you have
a mill, you can use the correct collet from the mill, in the mill.

I am also replacing the grease fittings. I can't believe how hard I have to beat on the old ones to get them out, even after soaking in PB Blaster.
The second challenge is getting the new press-in ones in past the 1st rib. Am pretty sure they are in straight. I'm using the driver like in CarlG post above. And I'm smacking the hell out of that, too. The new fittings have 4 ribs on the shaft. the old ones are plain. Maybe I'll grind off the 1st 3 ribs so at lease I get the fitting 3/16" in? Any advice?
 
Should not be that hard to do. Sorry to ask this question, but you don't happen to be putting the press-in ones in screw in ones holes? Again sorry, I am sure you know which ones are which but thought I would ask.
 
I don't understand the need for changing the grease fittings. Wouldn't it be easier to just buy the grease gun adaptor? I like the original fittings and grease gun, though I will admit refilling the original grease gun gets to be a bit messy.

No. Pressed in one came out of hole. The screw in ones are easy. Currently doing the upper & lower king pin fittings. Half the car was already converted to modern zerks. I did buy an adapter and it didn't fit any of the older type fittings. Don't have the part # handy just now. I suppose Ford was buying fittings from several suppliers, hence all the different styles?:confused:
 
I've been doing the same replacement job you are and had similar problems getting the new ones in past all the ribs. On the ones I could really hammer at, I got them in all the way. The others I just got as tight as I could and left them. They certainly won't fall out and I can get the grease to the fittings. The "steps" in the replacement press in fittings are different than what came out, but they do fit tight. Some of my "original" press in fittings came out very easy. I only had one that was stubborn.
 
I found that on the rear wheel fittings, one of them would not let me drive the new fitting in all the way without bottoming out, and if I did drive it in all the way, it wouldn't take grease due to it hitting the shaft. BTW, someone before me probably had that same problem and gave up, as there were no grease fittings in the holes when I bought the truck.
 
I've got a combo of old and new on my car. Unfortunately many of the channels behind them were clogged with grease that turn into rubber-like-material over the decades. To help clean things out, I've been using a hypodermic needle filled with PB Blaster and before I replace a zerk, I try to inject it with the PB a few times, heat and move and see if that opens them up. Unfortunately, more times than not, I've had to remove the old fittings and install the new.
