Can someone tell me where i can purchase a ring and pinion fior a 79 Granada with 2.79 gear ratio..Looked all over the net to no avail..Thanks

Is it an 8 inch? If so Summit has them in different ratios. An actual ID of the rear end you have would help to determine what if any gear sets are available.

If it didn't come equipped with disc brakes, as found on the Lincoln Versailles, it should be an 8-inch. I doubt that you will find new ring & pinion gears for an 8-inch (or any other differential for that matter) numerically lower than 3.00; there's very little demand for them. You might get lucky and find a NOS set, but it will be expensive. Your best bet is to look for a quality used matched set that has little wear. Most swap out the numerically lower gears (highway gears) for numerically higher gears for better acceleration.

I understand what you're trying to do. I swapped out the 3.31 gears in my 55 Tbird/w Dana 44 for 2.72 gears that came out of an 80s Corvette. Like you, I couldn't find a new set, other than an expensive NOS set that Eckler's had.

You might have better luck with an 8.8 axle assembly; my 1988 Mustang 5.0/w AOD came with 2.73 gears. Although it would barely break the tires loose, it otherwise accelerated very well.

As said above check the ID plate to help you Id your rear. Ford used a 7.8, 8.8, 8 inch and a 9 inch in that Ford, Mercury and Lincoln body style. The 7.8 and the 8.8 will have a back plate and the 8 and the 9 inch will have third members. The 9 should have disc brakes as said above.

Had new 3.50's installed in a Maverick 8 inch that I put in my '54 Ranch Wagon. No problem getting gears. Other ratios were available as well.

Until the rear is positively identified, there is little use in guessing -
