GPS 6 Volt

Who is running a GPS on their 6 Volt system and what make and model? I don't want to go the 12 volt route and I don't want one of those 12 volt starter boxes in my floor board. Thanks...Nick

Check the voltage on your charger, if it is 5or6 volt than it would work fine! This is true for cell phones as the 12 volt adapter usually steps the voltage down to 6 volts. If these are the numbers on yours all you would have to do is install a "12" volt power accessesory outlet [cigarette lighter] just wire it correctly with the proper GROUND positive or negative and it should work with the 6 volt system using the auto addapter that came with it! Hope I made myself clear! bobbycoke

My Garmin 265 runs all day on its built in battery, though I generally turn it off, say when on a particular road for an hour.

I also now have a low cost 300 amp "Jump Box" from ACE which has a 12V output to run my 12V toys while on the road.
Its plenty small enough to fit under the front seat with its extension jack wire extended out.
It plugs in at night.

So, GPS devices will run on 6V from a cigarette lighter jack? I assumed they required 12V.

No?

If this is true, that's great! I was going to buy one of those $99 6V-to-12V converters for my GPS.

Ray, Yes you can run some GPS's on 6 volt. Not all. I had one, but it was stolen and I can't remember the Model #. It was a Tom-Tom. I use a 12volt female plug acquired from Walmart for about $10.00. Very easy to wire into the Model A system. Mounted under the gas tank next to the steering column by way of Velcro.

I use a Garmin which has a "smart" charger that will operate from 5V (the operating voltage of the Garmin unit) to 30 V DC. I have a 6V + ground car. I simply bought an external type of accessory plug and wired it up backwards and placed it under the dash tunnel. Works fine.

300 amp "Jump Box" ................. ace hardware ??? ... thank you .. steve

Go rogue. Use a map and compass. Add a clock and slide-rule if you want to calculate time/distance. No voltage required.

I run a garman on both my A and 33,on 6v pos earth,I got a *** lighter socket from the junk yard ,mounted it on an insulated pad, then hooked the pos to the centre term on the socket, and neg to the outside, it works great.

we got a battery holder from RadioShack.com that holds 8 AA batteries.
(8x1.5v= 12v) wired up a cigarette lighter receptacle to it and plugged in the Garmin. worked great from FL to French Lick last summer. remember to unplug at night or you'll be shopping for 8 more batteries the next day. :p

Now thats funny! Unfortunately, map reading...or just finding your own a** on a map is becoming a lost skill. But I'm assuming Nick is Army or former Army...so shouldn't be difficult. Good luck on the GPS thing, and hopefully it doesn't put you in a cornfield like my TomTom tried doing.....mayhem:D

Nick, I tried finding the answer to your question myself with limited success. This morning I decided to bite the bullet and hook up my Garmin to 6 volt. No sparks or that sickening smell of frying electrics just a 5" screen telling me that it was charging the batteries. My Garmin is a model 1450. Clyde

The last thing I want is an electronic voice telling me where to go, my wife does a fair job of that already.

You know, at least the GPS has a VOLUME SWITCH that goes all the way down to ZERO sound. Quite unlike the "Little Lady" sittin' next to me. Oh well, she's been hanging around for over 50 years, so I guess I'll keep 'er...:p
