Got 'er running!

I am thinking positively, what tempature is almost in the red?
170,180,190? Was your water level to high and burped out excess
coolant? When I was new to model A's I thought I had cooling problems,
only now I know I was over filling. The level should below the baffle.

Since it overheated and burped up water after only 2-3 minutes driving in the neighborhood and idling for 8 minutes I have to wonder:

Was the spark lever advanced to about 1/2 quadrant or was it fully retarded?

Benson, I did have the spark lever fully retarded. Is that wrong? I have it all the way up when I start the car and then lowered it to about half, then after it idled for a minute or two I believe I moved it all the way down...

I have no thermostat installed. I did put a stocking on the upper radiator hose to catch debris. The temp guage read 190. I know it was not overflled. In fact, the problem may have been it was under-filled. It had maybe a tiny amount above 2 gallons. I read after the fact that the cooling system capacity was 3 gallons.
Strange thing was, after it cooled down I went to add more water and it only took about another half gallon until it was about to the very top of the radiator...even with the amount that had burped from running hot.

Your not supposed to fill the radiator to the top.... Just keep it at the level of the baffle inside the tank..
Watch your stocking doesn't clog or fall apart..... I never use those as I would rather flush it with a pipe.....
Do some searches and reading

Mitch-
Will do. I did drain it a bit, I didn't intentionally fill it that high. I just went into thinking it would take the full gallon and before I knew it, it was full.

Thanks you for the link, I know I have that instruction manual somewhere. Should've dug it up and done some reading before running it. Thanks again.

See if there are any model a guys near you, or a club. It is better to have help first hand than to ask 20 questions and be guessing.
You might make a friend in the process.
Maybe the previous owner's old club is closeby.
Bob

Cooling systems will vary in capacity due to many variables. IE: radiator type and condition, engine block condition
Filling it over the baffle will cause it to push out the overflow and many think they are overheating because of that

I second Brentwood Bob # 28.

I have made this suggestion many many times
despite the feedback that I get it is a tried and true method and is really what all the clubs are about

I'll be weekend warrior'ing on this project for a bit, getting things taken care of that I know need to be done. I will be in search of a club, all the knowledge and advice here is awesome, but I can see how it would be very helpful to have someone in person to bounce ideas off.

$12 = 160 degrees, $20 = 180 degrees @ Bert's
You'd be surprised what one of these can do.
something to consider.
