A month or so ago I posted about my frustration in keeping my windwings on my 30 Roadster from breaking when falling to the pavement and what might be done about it. So now after installing new wind wings from Snyders, I think I have found a very good product for securing them in the existing repro hardware clamps. So after failed attemps with contact cement, rear view mirror glue and weather strip adhesive, I believe the double faced tape supplied with the hardware is no good and will dry-out and fail.
In discusing the problem with my local commercial window glass contractor, he advised to use a VHB tape (very high bond) manufacturerd by the 3-M company and is used to place and secure large, heavy panes of glass in commercial buildings. It comes on a roll with a peel-off membrane and he donated a couple of feet by 1/2" wide to me.
Placeing a six foot long 1x4 across the doors and ahead of the steering wheel for holding-up and positioning the glass, cleaning all mateing surfaces with alcohol, then cutting eight 2-1/2" long pieces, and placeing them initially on the stationary clamps, peel the membrane off and position the glass, press firmly. Place remaining tape pieces on the other half of clamp and install. Once the tape is pressed against the glass, you won't be able to move it. After tightening the inner clamp, let sit for 24 hours and trim any excess from the glass with a razor blade.
After I was done with this installation, I took a small piece of VHB tape and pressed between my fingers. It surprised me as to how difficult it was to get my fingers apart! I think this is going to work great.
