Getting started

39' merc

Got a 1939 Mercury. Let's just say I have some work ahead of me. Time and money will come in, well...., time. But I am looking to get it driveable. So I have a few questions for all of you that have been in my shoes.

1. What does it take to rebuild the engine? is there a kit that I can buy or do I have to look for individual parts. Also is there a book that you suggest. Or is it better to let someone that knows what they are doing, to do it?

2. The transmition I know is not original but same applies. Do I do it or send it out?

3. Wireing, is there a complete kit or do I have to look for different peaces?

4. Breaks, I know the car was parked because of the breaks, But same where do I start.

Also looking for a place to get misc parts

Any help would be great, will try to get picts posted soon.

Where do you live?
There are no engine kits in the style that people did about thirty or fourty years ago.
Lots of these things change depending on the style, stock, hot rod...
Get parts-my favorite- at swap meets- better deals, meet people, see what you're buying... And there lots of venders- Bob Drake, Oregon... Reds Headers, SoCal... Mac's, Lockport New York... And more Best of Luck... Karl

One thing you need to know about the engine is: Is it the original engine, It may have been replaced at some time. Having it checked by a knowledgeable Flathead mechanic may save you time and money.

I live in colorado spring, co. Thanks for the ideas

Yes it is the original engine, I am sure I will have to replace it at some point but I would like to keep/rebuild it for now if I can.

This is an exeunt engine for rebuilding, a 99 seried block is one of the best. Noted for thick cylinder walls. These were preferred stock-car engines back in the 40's early 50's.
