Getting a title in NY?

Has anyone been through this process before? I Literally dragged my 32 out of the woods with a tractor (with permission from the last known owner who never registered it either) and did not receive any paperwork. I am told there is a process here in NY but not sure where to start. I do have the VIN off the frame.

There are no titles given to vehicles aged prior to 1973 in NY. You will probably get a nontransferable registration that converts to a transferable registration, which can be obtained at your local DMV or County Clerks office

To do this you will need to fill out:

a Statement of ownership MV51B form

a Bill of sale certificate MV 51 form

a tracing , photo or Police verification of serial number of vehicle

a completed vehicle registration form MV 82

All these forms can be down loaded from the NY DMV Web site.

Maintain any verifiable pictures you have of the vehicles condition upon purchase.

Be advised that these declarations are subject to appraisal which means that you should not try to register a vehicle at a ridiculously low sale price which would red flag the application for potential sales tax fraud.

its best to have a bill of sale ,you can have a friend fill out the form and say it was registered to him in ny say 25 + years ago and lost the registration, there is a form for that, there records only go back 10 years, get a tracing and a picture of the vin # and you might have to have it weighed at a certified weigh station, plus the forms that dick told you about.they will give you a temp registration untill they check if it was stolen or ? and a transferable will follow in about 4 weeks.good luck:)

call the specel plate unit in albany they will send you all forms needed it,s about the only thing in ny that aint a hassel you don,t need phony bills of sale .you do need proof of ins & you have to pay the tax before they will give you a none transferable reg .then in a couple of weeks you will get a transferable regerstration.just fill out the paper work they give you send it regestered mail if you go to your local mvo office every clerk will give you a different story most of them don,t have a clue. the people at the speciel plate unit are very helpful & know what you have to do. just tell them you had the truck maney years & have no paper work. i have done this 7 times every piece of junk i drag home has no paper work.

The tracing is the key piece. The frame is usually not legible, but if it's a 4 cal it may still be on the block like model A or on the trans case, verify at Mac van pelt's site. My model A based thing I traced the block, castings work best with pencil lead.

Not quite ready to register the '35, but last fall I went to the local DMV with a bunch of questions and they provided all the forms that Dick S outlined above.

In addition, I was told that I would have to send all the completed forms to Albany....but Albany won't process the forms unless the sales tax was paid locally.....to do that you need a bill of sale stating the purchase price and the vehicle info including ID #

I had a BOS with me which reflected the amount paid but no ID # ......
I went home, called the local police dept and asked to come by as I needed them to do a 'VIN Verifcation'.....they had their own form.

I went back and paid the sales tax.......

One more thing, when you send the forms to Albany, you will have to have Insurance on the car....Albany issues you a temp. registration and you will have xx days to get the car inspected...

Why Albany and not local processing ? beats me

Thanks everyone. I have the VIN off the frame, but its pretty rough and not sure how well it would come through in a rubbing its *AAB5033504*. Also, I did not have to pay for this truck, do I just lie and make up a nominal fee to avoid questions and flags?

Interesting thread, seeing as I've inherited my wagon that's registered in NJ and will be residing in CT. I wonder what type of process I will have to go thru?

Keep V-8ing and 4-Banging!

like i said its best to have a bill of sale so they can charge sales tax its all about money,if you say it was a gift be preparied to fill out more forms and b/s.i have 2 DMV near me one you will never get it regestered a the second your done in 10 min go figure...remember get a bill of sale mv51 and mv51B i think, and have the seller fill it out...i usually put $500 as price so they get there money, remember its all about the the money

I would get a bill of sale that states in exchange for extracting the vehicle form my property, I tranfer title of a 19xx truck serial #XXXXXX to ____________

It doesn't matter if there is no cost, most registries will look it up and put a value on it for taxes.

If you officially inherited it and it was included in an estate you should be able to take the probate papers to the registry. If it actually passed outside the estate, or worse was a verbal you can have it....you have a harder road.
