Got a real barn find..... 1931 delux roadster it's been sitting since the 50s.bought it from a gentleman in his 90s.... But no title....any tips to get one in michigan in 2015-16...thanks for any help. Went to talk to the ol gals at the sos and its if I had just robbed a bank.....

Here in Iowa, The IDOT requires Proof of Sale (Bill of Sale) signed by Buyer and Seller; Picture(s) of the Frame Serial Number (Called VIN to them.)

Other information they like is additional photographs of the car. The more information, the easier it is to get a Title. Your Application will list the Title requirements.

These were the requirements for my 1930 CCPU "basket case." They will give me a "Bonded" Title. Whatever that means..

Some States will send out an Inspector verify the Frame Serial Number. VIN.)

Let us know how you do..

I just got a title for an old motorcycle here in Michigan. There is a special form the SOS has that you fill out.If I recall the process correctly, you have to submit a photo of the vehicle, and a copy of the online Blue Book valuation of the vehicle in the condition it is in. You take all that to the SOS, they give you a pass to go to the head of the line, and either while you wait (I went home) they run the VIN through the police records. They give you a call, you go back to the office, complete the paperwork, and about a week later a nice new title comes in the mail. It's a regular title,too-not some "salvage" title. Not too painful a process, all in all.

It has been a few years since I did it, but you must have a signed Bill of Sale with a serial/vin number (i.e. engine number) to start. SOS will provide you with a form in which you describe the details of the car including the serial number/vin number. You schedule an appointment with your local police station and have a policeman come out and verify the serial number and the information on the form. [I have not heard of anyone having the police ask to see the serial number on the frame]. They sign the form and with the Bill of Sale indicating the price, you return to the SOS and finish applying for the title - and paying sales tax, of course. I believe they do a search on the VIN and if there is no problem, you receive the title in the mail.

I don't think the police come out to inspect your vehicle any more. I had a couple of WW2 Dodges here in Michigan that I got titles for like that, but it's changed now.

You're probably going to need Hagerty's help here. If the vehicle is worth more than $2500, you will need a surety bond for twice the vehicles value. This will cost you $100 or so. I can add to the other Michigan guys' comments: No, the police don't inspect it. Yes, you need a bill of sale and document how you came to own this vehicle.

For valuation, take several photos of the car. Since anyone can copy a photo off a derelict car off the internet, it's also a good idea for you to be included in the photos. I went so far as to loop my arm around a window post while my wife snapped a photo of me holding the current Old Car Value Guide. Photocopy the page out of your guide that has your roadster and also photograph the 1-5 condition explanation page.

You will leave the copies with the secretary of state along with your surety bond and affidavit. The last question can be the deal breaker; look up the vehicle weight in one of the many reference books and bring that documentation along.

Do your homework and also check the engine and frame numbers. I chalked them and photographed them for my discussions.

Finally, take the morning off and go to the secretary of state early. Don't hit them with a ream of paper at 5PM because you'll both end up upset.
