Have to ask a question about installing a distributor in a 1950 8BA did total rebuild and now question when installing distributor do you need a shaft seal going back in timing cover?may have overlooked when disassemble and cleaning or someone may have left out from previous rebuild, engine had been bored and crank had 10 10 bearings has the stock timing cover any help, have looked for info on this but no success

No, a shaft seal is not used. The parts book doesn't show one and I've never seen one used either on Fords or Mercs. If one were used it would have to have allowed for the proper "mesh" between the cam gear and the distributor gear.

Thanks for answer, was a long time since i worked on one of these engines, the early 60s to be exact and restoring a 1950 F100 wanted to be sure. But you are right sure seems like there should have a seal, maybe a collar on distributor shaft with o-ring when secure will seal off anything from leaking in or out timing cover.... Thanks
