Generator

Newbe Question , I have overhauled my 31 generator i put in new field coils new brushes cleaned it on the inside and outside new bearings it is like new, I have tested for shorts with my meter and no shorts. So when i hooked the generator up and ran the engine my amp meter is not showing a charge i have taking the generator apart 3 times now and i just can not find what is wrong with it , i am using a cut out with a diode installed and it worked before i did the work on the generator, Please help thankyou Pete.

Simply apply battery voltage to the output stud on the generator to polarize it.

The easiest way to do this is to jump a short wire across the two cutout terminals.

One more thought, since you have a diode cutout, if the battery is installed with the wrong ground polarity you will have no output, even if you polarize the generator. Also the battery would be connected to the generator at all times and the generator would soon overheat. Hopefully you have a positive ground battery and the correct polarity diode cutout for it.

To polarize you can momentarily jump (or flash as they call it) the two cut-out terminals together with the handles of a pair of pliers.

Will your generator "motor" when you hook it up to a battery? A gen. that is working properly will run slowly, just like a dc motor when you hook it up to a battery. It should be smooth... and should draw around 6-7 amps. If it will not do this then will need to go back and check things again. Did you growl the armature?

I just did the polarize thing and that did not work thanks for all your help Pete
Are you checking for voltage at the generator output post? Or at the cutout output terminal?

Sometimes the cutout contacts are dirty and don't pass the current, even they they close. Actually, it's best to check both places and compare the readings. There should be less than .1 volt difference.
