Generator

I took my 1950 ford generator in to my local alt. and starter shop. I wanted change it to 12 volts.The owner told me to just install a 12 volt regulator and just run it that way. Will this really work?????? I dont know if he was just having a lazy day or this will work. Thanks Mike
