Generator that has fan mounting holes?

I was told that I needed a 1939 Std. or Pickup generator that has the 4 holes in the pully to mount the fan to. I'm using a 59 AB motor in a 32 Ford. Can you help with parts. I think the pullly screws on? Thanks

No, the 39 Std generator pulley slips on with a key way abd us held on with a nut. 81A part number I am pretty sure. Someone needs to repop that pulley.

I think there were aftermarket ones that were made with threads as replacements to work with the aftermarket replacement armatures. A lot of stuff ended up aftermarket with all the rebuilds through the years. A lot of parts were mixed & matched by the various rebuilders too. It just depends on what parts a person ends up with.

I have also heard that a 39 STD is the one to get ?? What's the big advantage of a 39 STD gen over a 36 to 38 ? or even earlier ??

Mayby because the 39 standard was the only fan mount generator that did not require a piggyback cutout,it had the firewall mount cutout/regulator. My guess.

The advantage of the 38 and the 39 standard generators is that they used a regulator instead of the cutout found on the earlier ones. You also have the option of using an alternator. Speedway sells the bracket and the pulley to utilize the 4 bolt fan.
Here are some pics of my 36 with a 59AB engine and using the generator / alternator mounted fan.

The type of generator you want to use will determine the pulley you need. The early three brush generators with cutout mounted on top use a fan mount pulley with a smaller ID hole. The later generators that use the larger rectangular voltage regulator, uses a fan mount pulley with a larger ID. There are various size OD pulleys available for both ID's depending on how fast you want to spin that generator.
I saw your ad for a pulley or complete generator with pulley but you do not mention exactly what you want or need based on what I am trying to explain above so I chose not to respond to your ad.

I have these 2 pulleys that are both Ford originals of the same part number, they are identical pulleys except one screws on and one is keyed on. So apparently they came both ways.

I know that FoMoCo made the armatures with threaded shafts a little later than 1939 so they evidently started makeing the replacement parts fo them to compensate for differences. There is also a posibility that Ford had different vendors making different parts at the same time but I don't know for sure. Generators & starters were high turn around items back in the day. Even today, alternators & starters may be the first items you ever have to change out on a new car.
