my understanding altinator charges at idle generator does not

my 56 12v shows 13v all the time never moves, lights on or off battery connected or not , car running or not 2000rpm or idle but if I disconnect battery it stalls
drove home last night with lights on 1 hr battery still strong
is the car going to leave me on the side of the hwy

confused

again I drove all morning with lights on
battery still has lots power

confusing part is engine stalls when battery disconected

watch a Farmall video -engine should stay running when battery disconnected
-I'm going to bypass VR by connecting- Field to battery grd
-battery pos. to ARM

Gen should spin

I had the same problem on my Galaxie and replaced the regulator. Bingo, now the generator charge reads correctly and on board voltage meter no longer constantly showing the same charge level.
Did you check the charge level with a multimeter..a digital one?

had that happen when regulator went south many times.if I did not hear belt squeal it would flip off and carry on spinning until it killed battery.that was my redneck method to check generator also.the memories ;)

Pull the alternator and regulator off and have it checked out. No sense screwing around with it.

I agree with Paul. If it's not charging correctly you're on borrowed time. When I bought my 55 bird I was 85 miles from home. A friend who was a first rate mechanic took me up. I told him when I took my exit and went East he could keep on south for home. He followed me all the way. He said my taillights were so dim he could hardly see them when the VR dropped in and went back to charging. Got home ok, but the next morning it wouldn't crank so I cut it pretty close. Pretty easy to pull both out and know for sure what you've got.

had gen checked, its good
so I assume its wires or reg
I was talked into a one wire chrome alt.complete ($200.) but I can't find anyone who still sells conversion brackets from 56 to 64 Y block ,they are discontinued
for some reason before 53 and after 65 available
SO ANY IDEA'S ON CONVERSION BRKS ...

well it appears they still make brackets but 2 week waiting period and $45. U S turns in to $150. Canadian delivered to Ottawa
well I guess I will do the same as high school, make one

you should be ale to use you brackets if you search there are probably instructions out there.I did mine years ago all I needed was a threaded rod and nuts.pretty simple no need for a kit.from memory I used 7/16" rod and nuts

altinator is in and charging 15v
one wire alt had to be moved forward 3/4 " to line up pulleys and the adjustment bar needed a curve so it didn't hit alt fan
longer bolts and spacers I had laying around
so to get my generator system going reg was $107.(returned)
new one wire CHROME( non chrome $160 out of stock) alt$200. installed

Good for you for thinking it through. Some of the one-wire alternators have to be revved a little to charge after starting the engine every time, some don't. Don't be alarmed if you have to rev it a little to get it charging.
