Generator subsitute

  • While driving to the Central meet a friend of mine had a generator failure of brushes and overheated gen.
  • Has any one fabricated a free wheeling adapter/subsitute (short term use) to be able to continue down road?
  • He was able to find a local Early V-8 member that directed them on to a replacement generator. 6 hr delay in trip. + $$$$
Thanks
Alan

If your going to go through the trouble of building an idler and carrying that why not just carry a spare gen? I carry every thing I can, if you have it you won't need it. I carried a gen and voltage regulator when I used a gen. Now I have an altenator and carry a spare. The alternators I made for my own use have the rectifier and the voltage regulator built into the rear cap where the brushes were. This has a plug on it inside and plugs into the stator and rotor which has the other half of the plug. Have over 5,000 miles on the one in the 39 convertible and it charges perfect all the time with a steady output. When my Optima went bad I was able to continue 800 miles with the alternator, the generator would have left me dead where I was. G.M.

Did the generator actually freeze up so it wouldn't turn? If it still will turn you can stop the electrical part by connecting the output terminal directly to ground and it will not generate. You just have to get to where there is help before the battery goes dead and the motor quits.

i like your car collection. The midgets are cool.

Carring a spare gen is the best way to go. I was just looking for a smaller/ lighter alternative. Not much room for inventory in 37 truck. water pumps; fuel pump; carb. starter....

I built an aluminum tool box across the front of my 39 P/U bed. Bottom is full of parts and cloths, suit cases, etc. on top of tools and parts. There is not much room in a 39 P/U. G.M.

How about this?;) ha

I had a generator fail with all the field windings exploding ,On the side of the road I removed the outer case and remounted it with the front bearing and belt to run the pumps ,I drove on with the armature free wheeling (exposed ) It got me home .
