Generator/Regulator Woe's

Could be the gen is charging adequately but the ammeter does not show much. That is how mine is on the 52 Merc. Only time I see it much above the centre line on the ammeter is after a hard start with lots of cranking when the carburetor had drained itself. Otherwise the needle is pretty stable on the centre mark of the ammeter. Turning on the lights has a slight effect towards the discharge side.

At idle without lights in I sit at 6.1v once it revs up the most I've seen is 6.25v. lights on the needle shoots half way to "d".

Yep, that's a problem, should be in the mid 7 volts rev'd up. See if any of this information on Voltage Regulators helps. My first concern would be if the generator is working. And again, my manual has detailed step by step test procedures for the entire charging system with detailed diagrams of the components including the internals of the voltage regulator and how to check and adjust each part.

Awesome thank you! I did do the jumper from the battery to field and it started charging like crazy but I didn't leave it on for long. Basicly just touch for a second see the needle go to one end and let go of the jumper.

Undo the F lead at both generator and regulator and run a new jumper wire between and test .

Your symptoms sound like an earthed out F lead .

A friend gave me his spare regulator this evening. Solved all the problems.

Here's what the old one looked like, I'm thinking the cut out relay was toast as when excited nothing would happen.
