Generator rebuild

A friend has a 1953 Ford Crestline that was converted to 12V by a PO. He has an old 6V generator that was included with a box of parts. Wondering if a 6V generator case and endplates can be used for a 12V rebuild. Does anyone know of a source for a 12V rebuild kit that would fit the case. Also, seems like the field windings are not usually included in a rebuild kit. Are they generally available separately? Or are they often just reused?

I'm not aware of any complete rebuild kits. I source parts from various places and make some of my own. You might find 12v fields on ebay. I can restore yours and convert it to 12v is desired. There are others here who can vouch for my work.

A Fordbarn SEARCH will provide lots of info as much has been written about 12V styarter conversion.

I've used a Ford 6V front end plate with the barrel, armature and rear end plate
from a 1956-1964 Ford. I've also machined the commutator end to the size for the much smaller 1956-1964 rear bearing. Works well.

That being said, I have not tried this with the later 6V generator.
