generator over charging

my 46 with 8 ba charging rate at highway speedis high run with lights is normal had 8 volt battery now new 6volt lots of strength at start up new regulator same result any way of turning generator down any sugestions wiould be appreciated

If the wiring has corroded, loose, or otherwise defective connections the terminal that senses the voltage will not get the full battery voltage and therefore charge higher to try to make up for it. Regulators used to be adjustable, but I haven't been around one in years. Someone will chime in with which terminal senses the battery voltage. Measure the voltage on that terminal and compare it to the voltage at the battery, it should be very close, within .1V or so. New batteries can also be defective. If all else fails, take it back to where you bought it and have it checked.

Adjust voltage regulator. The generator puts out quite a bit more than advertised. The voltage regulator does just that. It may have been adjusted to 8 volts for the previous battery.

If you were charging an 8 volt battery with the same setup, the regulator is probably set too high for a 6-volt battery. I did the same thing once, short term solution was to run with the headlights on. It still charged way too high, I adjusted the regulator by changing the tension on the contacts (with guidance from someone who knew which one to adjust).

2X.
Whoever put the 8V battery in adjusted the regulator to charge the 8V battery. The regulator is there to "regulate" the generator. Without the regulator, the generator would put out a higher and higher voltage as is spins faster and faster. Get or borrow a Green Bible and adjust the regulator.

A generator is nothing more than an electric motor being spun by an external mechanical power source (belt drive). If it's broken, it may put out less or nothing at all, but breaking it cannot make it put out MORE in any way.

The regulator operates to interrupt the outflow of the generator, keeping it down to the desired voltage. It is the only component that can cause overcharging.
