Generator issues

'52 works fine until tonite with lights on the amp gauge needle started jumping around then showed discharge for a while. What's up with this - possibilities?

Check belts and electrical fittings first. Test generator output next. And so on.

Like I said needle sometimes jumps erratically but only with the lights on.

Inspect the generator brushes....

Take a couple pieces of wood -popsicle sticks or coffee stirring sticks, use these to push the brushes into the armature... With the engine off- and then if you feel confident, with the engine on...

This may tell you if you're looking at worn brushes or maybe a broken brush spring.
