Should the generator rear plate be left natural or painted black?

Cutout..same questions

Pulley: which one of these should I use?

I believe the rear cover was aluminum color, the cutout is plated. The smaller pulley will turn the generator faster and put out more but I don't think you need it. Save the smaller pulley in case you ever get a 6 volt alternator, this will allow the alternator to produce voltage at lower engine RPMs

Thanks..
the rear plate had black on it but I'm sure it was from a rebuild. I'll leave it natural aluminum, I think it looks nicer.
I got the cutout polished up pretty nice, I think a clearcoat may help it stay nice looking.
I was already de-rusting and cleaning up the larger pulley, so I'll go ahead an use it.

On the pulleys...many, not all, are cast with the PN prefix like 40 or 68 dimly visible after the rust is removed. This would allow the part number and application to be determined.

Based on what I can see in your pictures, on this little 2"x4" Droid Razor screen :)...the larger diameter pulley on the right is what I have typically seen on most '35-'36 Ford commercial vehicles, such as 1/2 T pu's, panel trucks, etc. The smaller pulley on the left looks like what I have typically seen on most '35-'36 passenger cars. I was told and have read the larger pulleys were used on commercial vehicles where over charging the battery could be a big problem for work/delivery use vehicles that were driven frequently for long periods of time each day making deliveries or taxing passengers, etc. If you were running an alternator or wanted to pull more air with a fan mounted on generator pulley (higher rpm), there were/are pulleys available with even smaller outer diameters. I have attempted to get a sample of every different ID vs OD fan mount pulley that were used on these early Ford V8's.

Bruce - the only number on the pulley after cleaning off all the rust is "3"

John - thanks for the info. I'm going to be using the larger pulley on my pickup
