Gearbox differences..multiplate to later type?

Hi there ,

Currently returning a 1930 A coupe to the road, had it all ready to go, one long drive, and became obvious the gearbox is pretty ruined..it is incredibly noisy in first and second, leaked a quart of oil overnight (!) and obviously needs rebuilding, but I think it may be a total loss, it sounds like it has NO roller cages in the shafts, and im amazed it didnt just jump out and land in the gutter in a hard pull in second..I know they are noisy, but this thing is ridiculous.

anyway, its up on the hoist, ready to come out, and I have a few questions.

1. Pull the engine and box complete? or take the rear end out and take the clutch cover/gearbox out the back? pros and cons of each?

2. I have an early multiplate box sitting here, so I just stripped it down and inspected it, and its really good! just needs bearings, no damaged gears, roller surfaces all fine, good shifter, so the question is..
is the input shaft out of a later box compatible with this box?

I.E. can I take the 30 gearbox out, pull the input shaft out and build up the early box with the 30 input shaft? if its not a direct replacement, what would be the difference??

Thanks very much Fordbarners!

Ben

Bugger.

Thanks Fred!

ah well, Ill pull the existing box out and strip it. will report on what I find.

at least I can rebuild this box and sell it to a mad 28 restorer who wants a multiplate..its really nice!

I had a ****** that sounded just like you described, a broken down threshing machine. I pulled the rearend and ****** and when I took it apart everthing inside was just like NOS, except for the small roller bearing between the input and output shafts. It had a few chewed up rollers. I put it back together with a good bearing and it's very QUIET. Contrary to some beliefs the Model A ****** isn't real noisey if it's in good condition and has the right gear oil.

Thats encouraging news Tom, thanks!

So the thick 600W stuff is the go?

the 80w/90 i put in just fell back out again!!

I believe the guts of the 28 will go in the 30 case except for the input shaft. I just had a look at the 28 MD I just pulled out and replaced with a 39 Ford trans.

Im going to try it out, and if its possible to utilise the good internals from the 28 case, I'll do that. will let you all know what I find out on monday.

You do need heavy oil. We did an article in the Winter 2005 issue of the Model A Times regarding the 600w. If you mix STP with 140W in a 25%/75% formula you get an equivalent. Then we found Lubriplate and did an article regarding SP0 288 in the Spring 2008. It is a product available through industrial equipment suppliers for use in straight cut gear applications. We have been using it sense then and it is wonderful.
