Hi to all,

I have a Model "A" coupe, and today at a parade the gear shift lever came out of the detent were the shifting forks go into the sliding gears. Never had this problem before had the car 20 years any thoughts on why this happen???

thank you,

mike

Time to redo the shift tower/shift lever. Pull the shift tower off the transmission and see what you have. Just did one with the same problem.

Any help would be great, i have installed a new shifter before on another car. Could the forks themselves need to be replaced?

mike are you saying that the shifter came out of the trans tower?

Mitch,
no the shifter came out of the detents of the shift rails <forks>

here is the break down of the shifter tower. the shift lever is held in by a spring and spring keeper. the shift forks are held to the shift rails with tubular rivets. the shift rails are kept in the proper positions by the detent springs and detent caps.

Take the top of the gear box off to see if the spring is broken. Back when I was a kid, I would pull up on the gear shift lever and swing it to the right(to the tank), made more room for the girl friend and I in the front of the RDST. Get the picture, but sorry, no Polaroid's. Dudley

i guess you did'nt have a back seat

It sounds like the shift lever ball came out of the notch in the shift forks. If this is the case, then the tower needs to be removed and the ball and notches need to be rebuilt to proper size (1/2").
