Has anyone had any luck making a gear shift lever spring removal/install tool themselves, or is it best to just pay the $41 from one of the 'suppliers'?

I bought one, but if you know someone who has the tool, it would be easy to make.

Getting the spring off is fairly straightforward with hand tools. I do it with my hands under a towel to keep the spring from launching itself. Even with the prescribed tool, I found it awkward to use and safely install the spring. My preference is to use stainless steel aircraft safety wire for the installation. I compress the spring in a vise, install three twisted loops of wire to retain the spring, and cut and remove the wire once the spring is installed. Gar Williams

get two pieces of 1/2" square tubing, one 6" and the other 8 to 10" long, weld them together to make a T", on the short leg weld on a big washer on the bottom, cut a piece out of the washer so it looks like a C,the washer should be big enough to cover the spring retainer so you can push it down to remove the spring clip, chuck the shift lever in a vise, put the tool on the spring retainer and put the top of the tool on your chest and lean on it to compress the spring and remove the retained clip, i made one and have used it for over ten years, if your not a good welder have some one who is weld it up for you
