Gazal cylinder head.

Anyone come across another head from this company Gazal? - Doubt it's Russian (despite its name ) as they also produced heads for 1930s Peugeot 301s, so I assume it's French ( images are from a French collector ). It's the first I've seen or even heard of!

My college French is 48 years in the past, but the ad seems to explain that this new “culasse” (which translates as breech) creates turbulence of the fuel-air mixture, thereby “provoque une explosion effective”.

Culasse in this context is cylinder head. Google translate is your friend for the rest for the advert . .."We are well aware that one of the great advances in modern technology lies in the development of the turbulence cylinder head favorable to efficiency and greater specific power. We know the bases of the problem following a 'one non-homogeneous air-fuel mixture, not all the fuel burns at the time of explosion, resulting in wasted fuel in the exhaust and significantly reduced power. With the turbulence cylinder head, nothing of the sort to fear .All things remaining equal, the special design of this cylinder head causes swirls of the gas mixture within the combustion chamber; the energetic mixing which results allows the non-vaporized gasoline particles to associate intimately with the pure air, so as to form a much richer mixture which causes an effective explosion with all its happy consequences. The ideal would be to be able to modify an already established type of engine, so as to allow it to benefit from the advantages"

It appears that the design was to cause a swirl in the combustion chamber, as talked about above. The swirl, or rotation of the charge, was in the horizontal plane of the engine with a vertical axis. It probably helped. The turbulence in the usual head design has an axis in the fore and aft direction but is more chaotic. The difference in performance between the Gazal head and the usual designs was probably not that much different.

I find that design a very special combustion chamber I wish I had 1 to test out I wonder how much ignition advance it needs the more efficient combustion chamber is the less ignition advance is needed!!!
