Happy Memorial Day to all on the Ford Barn! Some of you may have seen my earlier post of an old 35 Tudor I recently came upon and I decided to take my old friend for a ride. His name is Paul O'Brien. He is 87 and a WW II vet. (US NAVY 43-46). He told me he was a Machienist Mate on LST 521. He was also on the first wave of the Normandy Invasion and was part of a 3 man crew on an LCVP that carried 35 personnel and let them off on the shores of Normandy. He made 6 trips and obviously survived! Paul did many jobs in his life, but I met him where I work ( the Maryland State Police). Paul has been a volunteer there for 22 years! Unfortunately time is catching up with Paul and he is dealing with the typical medical issues that we all have to deal with eventually. Here is the cool car stuff he told me about. He said his first car was .......... Get this ...... a 1932 Ford Roadster with rumble seat. He told me his 3 friends and he bought it for $100. He said they would rotate using it every week and after their Friday and Saturday "dates" the next buddy would get it and so on. I asked him what ever happened to the 32 and he said they sold it when they all joined the Navy. he said they sold it for $250 so they doubled their money! I can't imagine kids actually sharing a car and making it work. He told me he owned a 35 like mine after he got out of the Navy so the ride brought back some good memories. Well that's all. Just thought some of you would like to he a nice story from a real hero! Guys like Paul NEVER ***** about life, they just handle it.

Wow, great story..love it ! And great idea also !! I'll bet Paul would would get on great with my father in law..Bill ! Bill was a gurnt in WW11 and was familiar with digging 'foxholes' with his helmet/whatever and living with tapeworms as a result of life in the ground in the Phillipines! He has told me many actual stories of his military service ...including duty to guard captured Yamashita ! Seems that I'm the only one that he relates the gory unglorious parts of his service to. I think that it has become his theropy/release from the dreadful memories.
Anyway, he tells me of car stories that are historical and histerical ! I used to take him for rides...ice cream/pizza,etc and he flirted with the girls that pulled up close to take a gander at my '30 roadster...and the two odd foggies cruseing (he' 94+ now). I keep offering, but he can no longer walk or curl up enough (braces) to get in anymore! However, he still carries a smile when I visit in my roadster and offer to go looking for the girls.

May God bless all veterans .. those still with us and those who have passed on !

Well I am sorry to say old Paul passed away last night. He went out peacefully and without any fan fare. Paul was a volunteer with the Maryland State Police and was so for 22 years. Paul touched the lives of many a trooper and he loved to talk to the young guys about life. Rest in peace Paul.....we all will miss you!

Sad to lose so many WWII Vets. They are dieing off at the rate of 1000 per day, and it won't be long before they are all gone. Always say thanks to them for what they did back then. I am afraid we could not do it again with the way our country is losing its love for God and country. That is truly a shame. Rest in Peace Paul, you earned it.

Rest in peace ,Paul. All gave some ,some gave all.Happy 4th of July Fordbarners ,don't do anything stupid today .:)

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Paul would be happy to know folks out there still appreciate what the vets gave to keep us all free.
