can someone tell me what the gav on carb is for I rebuilt or better to say cleaned and regasketed my carb and the valve needs 1and a half open obviously missed something? soaked in carb cleaner. maybe someone can recomend a better cleaner? thanks again got her out yesterday for a first spin

For the process I use to restore a carb, do a search on my posts. I have posted it at least trice over the last two years. I am on a smartphone today so it would take too long to type out..

I can tell you just spraying or soaking in cleaner is not going to work if it is plugged up with rust and junk.

Re: GAV FUNCTION EXPLAINED + REMOVAL

Q. Can someone tell me what the gav on carb is for ?

A. Click on the link and read the bottom of the page "The GAV Explained"

If you attempt to remove the GAV you will need a special deep socket wrench as mentioned here on Fordbarn in previous posts.

If the hex portion of the valve is rounded off by someone having taken a pliers, or ill fitting wrench to it, apply heat to the base of the GAV where it threads into the body of the carb. A propane torch will do the job. When heated, plunge the carb into a bucket of cold water. This will shock the threads loose and then try loosening the GAV with a small lock jaw pliers. Clean the passage at the bottom of the GAV with a paper clip and carb cleaner.

I soaked the carb in carb cleaner not spray this stuff is supposed to clean out all passages? instructions say not to get on skin so I will remove gav and clean see if that helps thanks forhelp

Carb cleaner can't remove rust that might be blocking the passages. Use a paper clip or other small wire and try to fish through the passages, and use compressed air to blow though. Once I think the path is clear I use a short piece of windshield washer fluid hose and my mouth to blow through and make sure they are clear.

A couple carbs I had to remove the plugs and use a small drill bit to clean the passages.

Soak in evaporust shaking the carb to get it everywhere and shaking it a couple more times as it soaks to to get "new" fluid to the tight areas. Then a cleaner with a straw and then air.
