GAV Setting

Where do you guy/gals set the GAV for normal driving? The manual says about 1/4 turn open but I can't find a difference or "sweet spot" in the 1/4 to 1 full turn open range. I would think it should make a difference.

If your carb has been properly rebuilt the only time necessary to open GAV 1/4 is for cold starting and when climbing a steep hill to give more gas to the cap jet. Once the engine is warm, and normal driving, you get best mileage with GAV closed.

I'm basing this information on the way I size the jets in the carbs I rebuilt.

Our A gets very unhappy if you open the GAV even close to 1/2 turn with it warmed up. I run it with the GAV fully closed.

Carb is stock with air filter and we are around 50ft above sealevel.

Symptoms of unhappy would be running very rich, shaking, black smoke from exhaust, especially if you rev the engine.

There is a chance your carb needs a good cleaning and the GAV simply is not working.

Mr tube sums it up I need 1/8th turn of Gav to start and until warm then shut it down Miss Elizabeth runs happy that way until an uphill situation than needs to be opened between 1/8 turn and 1/4 turn to maintain float level up grade or a sure loss of power . The Gav is again closed down at the crest of the hill to enjoy a nice run downhill, if left open too rich and some backfiring etc... each Carb and engine has their own sweet spot all a combination of jetting, vacumn, how well the needle seat seals etc... So just find what keeps her happy and stick to it, works with woman too!

Yea.....
I have no problem figuring it out on an engine, but have not had much luck with women :p.

Thanks to all. I will try running my 30 Roadster with GAV fully closed after warmup and see how things go from there........I love this site....and the hobby

I have a total of three model a"s running down the road right now.
All three have a different gav my 29 roadster needs no turning runs just as good without turning the gav, my 31 Vicky must be turn out 1/4 when cold and turn in when hot, the 28 has to run 1/2 turn out and then just a little in, So yes the carburetors on all three are different but the result is the same after getting to know each one, in other words yes just like women
