GAV and Starter issues

What causes a GAV to keep moving in a counter-clockwise direction? I put a new spring on it figuring the old one was weak but it didn't fix my problem.

Also my starter seems to be possessed. It skips and sounds like it's not making good contact, had it off and all apart and everything looks good but it doesn't engage well. Ring gear isn't great but I cleaned the teeth up with a file and it's not horrible. The other day I was pulling a steep hill in 2nd and lugging it down when the starter suddenly engaged and wouldn't stop. What would cause this?

The GAV is held steady by a friction gland. Tighten the hex on the part the valve screws into on the carb a little. Careful, it is metric.
Your starter drive has a weak spring on the little pin that holds the drive in the neutral position. Change the starter drive.

I had some GAV issues a couple of weeks ago on a fresh rebuilt, I found the GAV was "backing out" of the carb. I snugged up the fitting (see above) and it's been fine since.
Take a look at your ring gear on the flywheel (when you have the starter out) and look for chewed up or missing teeth.
Remember the starter engages from the back side of the flywheel - opposite of modern cars - they can look good from the front, but a small mirror thru the starter hole while a helper turns the motor by hand may tell you more.
Hopefully it is just a weak spring on the starter drive

Are you sure your foot didn't also engage the starter button when you had it pressed down hard on the gas pedal? That's about the only way it can be electrically engaged to spin, unless something is broken in the starter switch so it made contact with the starter contact.

On the starter drive, make sure the helix is clean and has just a coat of very light oil, such as ATF.

The GAV is held in the set position by a steel snap ring in a grove on the end of the fitting it screws into. That ring maintains friction between the fitting and the GAV. Your condition is usually caused by that ring being missing but it is possible it does not have enough tension.

Sorry for not replying sooner, thank you all for the advise and maybe today I can try to use some of it.
