Gasoline smell in my garage - 26 T / 30 A

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a 26 Model T roadster pickup and 1930 A cabriolet. I store them in a two car garage attached to my house but there is no entrance from the garage to the house. There has always been a strong gas smell in my garage fri, these cars, especially stein after I fill up. I had a fan installed in the roof to vent the air, and run it at night, but even with the door open to vent and the fan installed there is still a strong gas smell. Sometimes it leaks into my house a little, always worse in the summer and worse with the garage door closed.

Any advice on what to about this? I;ve had these cars for about 10 years but it can’t be safe to have gas odors sometimes in my house.

One thing to add, this doesn’t seem to be an issue since the winter, even with no fan and with the door shut. Any advice is much appreciated!

Both cars have vented gas caps as well as possible leaks in the shut-off gas valve. To test the shut-off I always turn the gas off and let the engine die. This uses the excess gas in the carb and should give you some indication of the ability to stop the gas flow.

Neater car has a sealed fuel system so it is normal to smell gas in a closed room like you store them in.
In the winter with lower temps you will have lower evaporation then when it gets warmer there is going to be more evaporation so more smell.

EXACTLY!

This is something folks in our hobby put up with as a general rule. I have been doing this stuff so long that I can barely smell the gas, thinner, paint, etc but boy Laura sure can! LOL I thought her 57 T-Bird had a faulty fuel gauge, so I took it to the gas station & tried to fill it up with premium. It only took about a gallon & a half. I thought there was a fill issue so I kept trying until I saw fuel in the fill tube. Turns out the guy I bought it from filled it up for me! Then of course it leaked a little out of the vent on the house garage floor, she immediately thought there was a problem:p

I had the same issue, a strong gas smell. It turned out gas was dripping from the bottom of the carb. and pooling in a recessed spot directly below it on the engine pan. I simply shut off the gas at the carb when I park the car and no more drips and smell.

Any signs of fuel leaks such as stains around lines, fuel system components, or tank should be repaired or fuel should be drained and stored in sealed containers. Tank and float bowl vents don't normally out gas all that much. I store motorcycles and lawn equipment in my home garage and I never detect the odor of fuel unless one leaks. Even a leaky float bowl valve can cause overflow and leak if the petcock doesn't seal the fuel supply from the carburetor.
