Gaskets

Doing some major repairs to my 1936 21 bolt Flathead. A simple fan blade failure resulted in a grenade like destruction of almost everything in sight. Fan, Radiator, distributor, coil, plug wiring, intake manifold, and alternator. On the plus side?, I also discovered head gasket issues while repairing the above.

I'll be replacing at least the following gaskets: both Heads, Manifold, water pump, fuel pump, and Carb. I may be missing some.

I have several questions after I saw the prices of the replacement. I'm a newbe, so be gentle.

1. What type of head gaskets should I use (Copper Or?)
2. Who has the best prices/quality?
3. Is it better to order a complete rebuild set ($$$)?

Best quality would be 'Best' brand
On Aluminum heads use their 'graphtite' gaskets, on cast iron heads use their copper gaskets.
Shop around for prices.
Sorry to hear of your disaster!

I've got some Fel pro 21 stud gaskets that won't go over the studs cleanly, whereas other brands do.

A copper paint like coating. Some like to use it and some do not.

The old skool [and the method I use] system is to paint both sides of the head gasket with silver paint as an aid in sealing.

I would also recommend "Best Company" gaskets. Just bought two complete sets of '32 to early '38, 21 stud engine gaskets from "Third Generation Automotive" in Tennessee, for use on two '36 LB engines that need to be assembled. I've found, from past experience, that the quality of Best gaskets is second to none.

What's an LB engine?

I could find no online existence for Third Gen, other than a Facebook page that was last used over a year ago.

Their WWW.thirdgenauto.com/ is a dead link.

???

A 1936 LB engine has insert bearings factory installed, the LB stands for Large bearing, they are more desirable, than the Babbitt engines.

I’m with Brian my dad insisted in using silver paint on all copper head gaskets & he built hundreds of engines of all kinds & never a problem
So I to use it on copper gaskets
Cheers Tony

We stock the BEST brand gaskets also. Felpro is generally pretty good but we like the Best brand......just a bit better quality in my opinion.
